Formation and development
After our country unified (1976), City Party Committee, Ho Chi Minh City High Command, Cu Chi District Party Committee made decision to keep and protect 02 tunnel monuments as follows:
1. Group of basic bases of Zone Party Committee and Saigon – Gia Dinh Military Zone High Command in Phu Hiep Hamlet, Phu My Hung Village, Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City.
2. Base of District Party Committee and Cu Chi District Armed Forces in Ben Dinh Hamlet, Nhuan Duc Village, Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City.
with purposes to protect precious successions of Cu Chi people. The system of “fighting tunnels”, the inheritance is crystallized from spirit, power, will, intelligence, creation and efforts of Cu Chi military and people as well as soldiers from everywhere in our country living, fighting and devoting thoroughly 30 years in the fierce battle. The purpose is also to propagate, educate revolution traditions to Vietnamese youths and foreign travelers visiting and researching.
Since 1990, the quantity of internal and international travelers has increased. The annual average number of travelers is about 01 million. To meet the need learning the Tunnels and creatural characteristics of Cu Chi people and learning how they could live, fight and win the very strong and cruel American invader. Cu Chi Tunnels Historical Monument Area has been reformed and reinforced. Old works are remained original actualities. Also it is developed, expanded and rebuilt the Cu Chi bulwark iron land liberty Area represented through war periods (1961 – 1972), five spaces rebuilding 02 war strategies of Special War and Local War of American in Cu Chi land and 09 tunnel stratum spaces and “motherland supernatural meditation” symbol.
Today, Cu Chi Tunnels Historical Monument Area is deployed and arranged as follows:
1. Ben Duoc Tunnels Historical Monument Area: The base of Zone Party Committee and Saigon – Gia Dinh Zone Military High Command in Phu Hiep Hamlet, Phu My Hung Village, 75 km on the roadway from the City center to the northwest with total square of 89 hectares. In which, tunnel area for visiting includes 02 bases with 15 hectares, the Martyr Temple of 07 hectares, the Liberty Area rebuilt of 50 hectares, the National defense sport shooting-gallery of 03 hectares and restaurants and rest houses of 0.5 hectares.
2. Ben Dinh Tunnels Monument Area: The base of District party committee and Cu Chi District Armed Forces in Ben Dinh Hamlet, Nhuan Duc Village of 06 hectares. In which, Operation area, Statement hall and service area with 01 hectare; Sport ground, orchard and rest houses with 01 hectare; Base for sightseeing tunnels of 03 hectares; National defense sport shooting-gallery and area for rebuilding historical services of 01 hectares and 10 hectares are ecology forests.
3. Personnel organizational system:
* Organizational system: Cu Chi Tunnels Historical Monument Area is directly under, directed in profession, duties and annual and periodical plans by the Ho Chi Minh City Military Headquarters.
* Personnel: (09/2008)
Total staffs and employees are 381, with following organization:
- Directorate: 05 persons, Director is Colonel Tran Van Tam and 04 Vice Directors.
- 04 Professional departments
- 08 Sections and teams under directly servicing travelers
4. Functions and duties of Cu Chi Tunnels Historical Monument Area:
- Building, protecting, rebuilding and maintaining projects of Cu Chi Tunnels Historical Monument Area in order to propagate, educate well revolution traditions to young generations and meet needs of foreign tourists coming to the Tunnels.
- Holding services and activities receiving money in order to supply to cultural, sport, amusement, relaxing requirements of tourists visiting the Tunnels, increase capitals for investing, protecting, modernizing projects of the historical monument area.
- Mobilizing and receiving resources of financing, contributions of organizations and persons inside and outside the country stipulated by the Government.
- Managing and using effectively labors, properties, materials, funds of the organization; Ensuring all activities of the organization correctly with regulations, policies and principles of the Government and the City People’s Committee.
